You wrote that book?" I drew them in further, pointing to the bat skeleton on the cover, and asked, "Do you know what that is?" We chatted. One guy, the kid with the purple stocking cap, managed to convince his parents that he just had to read this book. His chubby-cheeked friend didn't fare so well in the convincing department, so instead of getting a book, he asked for my signature on his new spiral pad. He smiled and said, "I'm writing a book."

The History and Meaning of Dr. Fu

https://www.bearrunantics.com/kamp-blog/2012-photos

https://www.bearrunantics.com/kamp-blog/2012-photos#comments

Uncategorized

Dr. Fu has uncovered a rather surprising bit of information that gave her duck bumps, a.k.a. goose pimples. Here is how the story goes:
Long ago, in a land close, close by, lived a camp director who loved kids and words. This combination birthed a book camp at A Book for All Seasons, with the grace and assistance of Pat Rutledge, the wise. Out on the porch of the bookstore, this camp director created different worlds every summer. One day, while playing in the Word Play Cafe, in preparation for a camp, she came up with the idea to have all the campers bring their favorite story books that were read to them at bedtime. From those books, campers then became their favorite characters for the week. Well, the fearless leader brought in her favorite as a child, The Five Chinese Brothers, written in 1938, a rather gruesome tale of quintuplets, all of whom went nameless except for a designation of the first brother, the second brother, the third brother and so on. So, the director decided she was going to be brother #1, the one who could swallow the sea and hold it in his/her mouth, and so she became Master Fu. Master Fu continued to be Master Fu each year until Mad Scientist Camp when she then became Dr. Fu and has been Dr. Fu ever since.

Now, here’s the weird part. In the process of getting her Master’s Degree in Creative Writing, she is writing a kid’s book based on Chinese mythology. (If you haven’t guessed, Asia goes deep in her soul.) In this gloriously fun tale to write, she has discovered that the word for ‘bat’ and the word for ‘good fortune’ is the same, and that word is ‘fu.’ Let the duck bumps romp!
